If you’re a Non EEA National on a temporary work visa such as Tier 1 General or Tier 2 General you (and your family) can usually enjoy use of certain UK State services including the National Health Service (NHS) and State Schools, but you can not claim cash benefits.
The overall guiding principle with use of the State provided services by Non EEA Nationals on temporary work visas is that;
- Use of the National Health Service (NHS) is ok
- Use of State School Education is ok, however
- Income Support / Unemployment Benefits are not ok
If you’re a highly skilled IT, Engineering, Medical or Financial Services professional and you are interested in working in the UK on a Tier 2 General Commonwealth Contractors can help!

The National Health Service (NHS)
If you’re on a temporary UK Work Visa you will be exempt from NHS hospital charges if either:
- You are engaged in full time employment with an employer whose principle place of business is in the UK, OR
- You are working as Self Employed and your principle place of business is in the UK
This exemption also applies to your spouse, civil partner and children if they are living with you in the UK on a permanent basis.
Please note that to be exempt from NHS hospital charges you must be in employment at the time you receive treatment. If you are here on a work visa but are currently unemployed you will be charged for your treatment, unless you are otherwise exempt from charges.
You may need to prove that your employment is UK based by showing; an employment contract, payslips, self employed invoices etc
State Education
If you hold a valid UK work visa for the UK your dependent children can attend government funded schools which provide education free of charge so long as they are under 18 years of age.
