A recent study by graduate career site WikiJob found that 63% of graduate respondents were on LinkedIn whereas only 23% of older respondents used the site. The results suggest that graduates, who are generally more familiar with social media applications are more willing to use it as a job-seeking tool. According to the report Graduates are more aware of the potential of social media, both as a form of self-advertisement and as a way of networking with employers.
The co-founder of WikiJob, Ed Mellett, said that “These results are evidence of the way in which graduates may have an advantage as the employment landscape changes. HR managers and recruiters generally agree that using social media can be an extremely fruitful job-seeking method. More and more employers are utilising social media to find out more about applicants before the interview process. Networking online will give graduates access to an otherwise hidden job market, and the results from our user poll indicate it is likely that a large proportion of graduates are already actively pursuing these opportunities. Maintaining a professional presence on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook will give graduate job-seekers a major advantage.”
Recently a study conducted by the recruitment agency Modis International found that Social Media was the second least popular recruitment tool for IT leaders. According to the survey specialist IT recruitment consultancies were most popular recruitment tool with 54%, while job board postings account for only 9%. Jim Albert, the Managing Director of Modis International, said that “Given that IT recruitment and social media would seem destined to be close allies, the results of this survey are certainly surprising. It should be remembered that social media is best used as part of a wider, multi-media recruitment drive, and this could account for the low figure that has emerged from our research. Previous polling showed that IT leaders had a growing appetite for using this medium, so there is still a gap between interest and actual usage.”
