Clegg says Conservative plans on Immigration was not in the Coalition Agreement

In response to Mr Clegg’s comments the Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said that ‘The Tory-led Government\’s immigration policy is now in utter chaos. Ministers need to explain urgently what on earth their immigration policy now is and whether cabinet ministers are actually prepared to deliver it or not. We still don\’t know whether David Cameron\’s promise to cut net immigration to the tens of thousands is Government policy or not – with the Prime Minister claiming it is, and the Deputy Prime Minister claiming it isn\’t. Immigration policy is too important to be left in such chaos. We need an honest debate about immigration, with strong, workable controls for the sake of local communities and the economy. Instead we have incompetence and disarray while the Prime Minister is not being straight with people about what his Government is doing.’

Last week Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat business secretary, called David Cameron’s speech on Immigration ‘very unwise’ hours before the Prime Minister was due to deliver it to Conservative Party members. However, speaking later in the day Mr Cable stressed that the Coalition was still united on the issue of Immigration by saying that \”We are completely united behind the policy and the policy is about a cap.\” He told the BBC earlier in the day that “The reference to the tens of thousands of immigrants rather than hundreds of thousands is not part of the coalition agreement; it is Tory party policy only.” Questioned in Manchester later in the day Mr Cable went on to say that \”I don\’t want to develop that, and I think I have said what I wanted to say. We have a common consensus, a compromise in the coalition on our policy on the immigration cap and I don\’t think I need to add to that.”

The Coalition Agreement which was agreed following the General Election said on the issue of Immigration ‘We have agreed that there should be an annual limit on the number of non-EU economic migrants admitted into the UK to live and work. We will consider jointly the mechanism for implementing the limit. We will end the detention of children for Immigration purposes.’
