Vince Cable calls Prime Ministers speech very unwise

Speaking to the BBC earlier in the day Mr Cable said that “The reference to the tens of thousands of immigrants rather than hundreds of thousands is not part of the coalition agreement; it is Tory party policy only.” Questioned in Manchester later in the day Mr Cable went on to say that “I don\’t want to develop that, and I think I have said what I wanted to say. We have a common consensus, a compromise in the coalition on our policy on the immigration cap and I don\’t think I need to add to that.”

Immigration policy was always going to be an issue which divided the Coalition with the Conservatives for an Immigration cap and the Liberal Democrats largely against. The Coalition Agreement which was agreed following the General Election said on the issue of Immigration ‘We have agreed that there should be an annual limit on the number of non-EU economic migrants admitted into the UK to live and work. We will consider jointly the mechanism for implementing the limit. We will end the detention of children for Immigration purposes.’ Mr Cable believes that he is in a good position because he thinks that the Prime Minister has come close to breaching the coalition agreement in yesterday’s speech. The business secretary believes that the remarks ‘run against the spirit, if not the letter, of the coalition agreement’.

Mr Cameron yesterday attacked mass migration to the UK and praised the work done so far by the Coalition Government on the issue of Immigration. The Prime Minister laid the blame with the previous Labour Government and the ‘woeful’ welfare system in the UK that allows many British nationals to live on state handouts rather than work.
