Google announces that it will create 1,000 jobs in Europe in 2011

Speaking at the Digital Life Design conference in Germany, and on the back of fourth-quarter profits of $2.54 billion, Eric Schmidt the CEO of Google announced that the company will boost its global workforce by 25% in the coming year with 6,200 new staff required across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in the year ahead. Mr Schmidt said that \”We looked at this year and in particular our prospects for growth in Europe, and our businesses globally are doing well, both our core business as well as our adjacent businesses, our \’hockey stick\’ businesses as we call them. It\’s all very, very good. We are going to invest in Europe.\”

News of any job creation is welcome, especially following the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) which have revealed that the UK Economy swung back into contraction in the final quarter of 2011; registering a 0.5% decline (a 0.5% increase had been predicted). The ONS put the figures down to the coldest December in 100 years. If the information is correct the UK Economy may have ground to a halt even before the effects January’s VAT Increase (from 17.5% to 20%) have been felt and fears over a ‘double dip’ recession will once again emerge.

The Chief Executive of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, Kevin Green, said that “The economy is still predicted to grow by just over two per cent during 2011 but while this won\’t drive huge job creation, it will be enough for the jobs market to remain positive. However this does clearly show that the Government must do more to stimulate growth and job creation. The one million young people not in work or education is a critical issue that must be addressed quickly to avoid a lost generation. To address this, an incentive to private sector employers to hire young people must now be considered urgently.”
