In April 2009 the minimum education requirement for Tier 1 General was increased from a Bachelors Degree to a Masters Degree following challenging economic conditions. This resulted in thousands of highly skilled Australians, New Zealanders & South Africans returning home for good as many found they were suddenly unable to qualify against the new criteria. Traditionally, following the expiry of a Working Holidaymaker Visa many highly skilled Antipodeans have returned home briefly to apply for a Tier 1 General Visa (formerly HSMP) before returning to the UK to build a career.
This change (so long as it is introduced by the UK Border Agency) will result in many Antipodeans once again working towards Tier 1 General Visas. Many of those who decided to leave the UK in 2009 may decide to return, however they may find it difficult depending upon whether or not they have continued to receive a highly skilled wage in any periods of down time.
Those either new to the UK on a Tier 5 Visa or nearing the end of a Working Holidaymaker Visa are recommended to contact Commonwealth Contractors for a Tier 1 Assessment.
