Worker Registration Scheme (WRS)

On the 30th April 2011 the Worker Registration Scheme closed meaning that nationals from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia can now work in the UK without needing to first gain permission.

What was the Worker Registration Scheme?

The Worker Registration Scheme was a temporary measure that was in place between 2004 and 2011 in order to restrict incoming workers from A8 countries (see below).

Following the accession of the A8 countries to the European Union the United Kingdom decided to take an open approach to work rights (unlike Germany who chose to defer allowing nationals in to the country to work) however the Worker Registration Scheme was created to try to keep track of how many workers were actually coming in to the country to work.
