The Managing Director at Greythorn, Paul Winchester, said that “The IT and telecoms infrastructure required to host the Olympics will leave a significant high-tech footprint on the UK labour market. Before the Olympics begin, emergency service lines need to be secured, WiFi coverage needs to be expanded and measures must be taken to prevent cyber attacks. Government forecasts suggesting 103,000 permanent jobs will be created by the Games, our estimate may be on the conservative side.”
According to recent market indicators (such as the REC’s JobsOutlook survey) the IT contract market appears to be surging ahead in 2011 and driving a vastly improving UK economy. At the moment skills such as .Net, Java, C++, C# are reported to be in short supply as are developers with FX, Fixed Income or Equities experience in the financial services sectors. Many projects appear to be back on as companies attempt to regain competitive advantage and ‘steal a march’ on other players in the sector.
The Managing Director of IT recruiter Jenrick recently said that “Our clients have been motivated to engage IT contract expertise to re-boot projects that have been in the doldrums. With all the signs that the UK is in the throes of recovery, clients find they have a need to regain their competitive edge and ‘steal a march’ on other players in their sector.” And Lee Berridge of the Recrutiment and Employment Confederation also commented, saying that “The end of the recession has brought about change for companies and that creates work for IT. So while virtualisation is being undertaken at some, other companies are upgrading. In terms of their systems, Windows 7 was slow to take off and is only kicking in now, and the same can be said of Exchange 2010. In some cases, managers have been have been forced to hire contractors due to the fact that hiring restrictions have been placed on permanent workers.”
