The Head of Medical Pay and Workforce at NHS Employers, Bill McMillan, said that “It is critical that the correct number of doctors are trained in the specialities and geographical areas where they are needed most, to avoid the risk of a shortage or significant oversupply. Both of these things would be expensive, demoralising for doctors and affect patient care. NHS organisations have a central role to play in medical training in the UK and are ultimately answerable to the public and patients for ensuring that they have the right people in place with the correct skills, knowledge and commitment.”
The report provides detailed information about 55 specialist areas and is a prelude to looking at the shape of the medical workforce during autumn 2010, with results to be published in September.
