The report, with has been undertaken by the British Medical Association’s Scottish Junior Doctors Committee (SJDC) claims that although work patterns appear to be compliant with the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) long periods of ‘unsociable hours could have serious implications for the health and wellbeing of doctors and negatively affect patient care’. However, with budgets already stretched it is hard to see how hard pressed healthcare organisations, especially those in the public sector, will be able to generate more resources and ease the pressure on front line staff.
The Chair of the Scottish Junior Doctors Committee, Dr Gordon Lehany, said that \”It is important that as NHS boards try to become compliant with European WTR they also consider safe shift-working patterns. To do this effectively, junior doctors should be involved in drawing up rotas. It is essential that the problem associated with working irregular shift patterns are recognised and reduced.\”
