Opposition To Immigration Cap

Following the historic Coalition Agreement the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats released a joint statement on future policies. On the issue of Immigration the two parties said “We have agreed that there should be an annual limit on the number of non European Union economic migrants admitted into the UK to live and work. We will consider jointly the mechanism for implementing the limit.”

Any cap on the number of non EEA migrants is expected to significantly affect Tier 1 of the points based system (formerly the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme). Tier 2 of the points based system (formerly the UK Work Permit system) is also expected to be significantly affected however the extent of any measures is not yet known. Any moves to tighten Tier 2 will directly affect UK businesses that are in desperate need of skilled workers from outside the EEA as they have been unable to find suitable workers from within the EEA resident labour market.
