During the debate, which focused on foreign policy although touched on Immigration, David Cameron once again put forward his plans for a cap on immigration in the ‘tens of thousands, rather than the hundreds of thousands’. However, Mr Cameron was unable to say how many migrants would be allowed to enter the UK each year when asked by Nick Clegg how the Conservatives planned to set the cap.
Gordon Brown once again said that his Government had introduced the Points Based Immigration system and that only those people with the right skills to work in the UK would be allowed. He said that since the introduction of the scheme the number of foreign students coming to the UK had been cut by 40,000.
