New Rules for EEA Doctors Urged

The Committee has said that ministers should push for changes to European Union rules to allow checks to be made by the General Medical Council (GMC). At present European regulations on the free movement of labour mean that the GMC is unable to carry out language or clinical checks on doctors from EU countries. This is in stark contrast to checks made by the GMC on doctors from outside the EEA who must undertake a rigorous two part PLAB test before they are allowed to practise medicine in the UK.

The Committee has recommended the Government lobby Europe about the change urgently (a review is due to be conducted in 2012), however in the meanwhile employers are being advised to conduct rigorous checks themselves on Doctors from within the EEA before hiring them.
