GMC Chief Executive: Revalidation Going to Happen

The National Health Service (NHS) is expected to face difficult challenges over the coming years with greater pressure placed on budgets and greater bureaucratic burdens borne by doctors. However, Mr Dickson and the Chairman of the GMC, Peter Rubin, said that the process of revalidation should not create additional burden for doctors and that where good clinical and governance appraisal systems were in place doctors should see few changes.

Last November the General Medical Council reformed the way doctors are licensed to practise medicine in the United Kingdom. Since then doctors must not only hold a GMC registration but also a ‘License to Practise’, a digital document that confirms that a doctor conforms to good medical practice standards and is up to date with all required training. A License to Practise to only valid for a few years, after which time a Doctor must go through the process of ‘Revalidation’ if they wish to continue practising medicine in the UK.
