Indian Doctor Migration

The new medical centres will be based on the ‘All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ (AIIMS), which is considered to be India’s best state run research and treatment centre. The government has given the go-ahead for seven new medical institutions in the states of:

• Bihar
• Chhattisgarh
• Madhya Pradesh
• Orissa
• West Bengal
• Uttar Pradesh
• Rajasthan

Dr Mehta believes that many Indian Doctors who are currently undergoing training in the UK will be lured back to India by the new centres as they are looking for quality doctors. If this happens the NHS may be put under even greater stress.

In recent years the National Health Service has been placed under significant stress due to:

• A New Medical Training System: Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) has changed the way doctors undergo medical training in the United Kingdom. It’s introduction was marred with controversy, not least by issues with the Medical Training Application Service system (MTAS) and a lack of training posts available to doctors
• Tighter Immigration Requirements: In the wake of the economic crisis the government increased the qualification requirements under Tier 1 of the Points Based Immigration System from a Degree qualification to a Masters. This made it more difficult for many doctors from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to gain a suitable work visa for the United Kingdom
• GMC License to Practice: Although a step forward for the better, the General Medical Councils new ‘License to Practise’ on top of GMC registration has made it more difficult for Non EEA doctors to return to work in the UK
• The European Working Time Directive (EWTD): Much criticised, the EWTD reduced the hours of doctors in training from 56 hours to 48 hours per week in August 2009. This has resulted in less trainee doctors available in Primary Care, and consequentially a greater requirement for experienced Consultant Level Doctors on the front line.
